The exhibition
The art gallery ekfrasi – yianna grammatopoulou presents a group of new works by Dimitris Skourogiannis under the title Rhymes.
In Dimitris Skourogiannis works, the color, the lines and the materials are united with myths and fairytales such as Persephone, The Princess and the Pea and Beauty and the Beast. They open a dialogue, they “rhyme” or they conflict with the given narrative tradition. They create stories that speak about the present time, stories without ending.
In Rhymes, as the art historian StratisPantazis notes, “we re-discover the elements that compose Skourogiannis’ visual vocabulary. The sketch and colour meet sculpture, assemblage, readymade, photography, collage, embroidery on tulle and writing. The volume of the 3-dimensional materials and objects he uses on the background of his works, is “muzzled” by the stretched tulle, which comments, adds or juxtaposes the, under development, morphological and conceptual content of each work. The different levels cover one another and all together compose the final image.”
Thomas Symeonidis, writer and an associate tutor in Aesthetics and Philosophy at the Athens School of Fine Arts, notices: “The work of Dimitris Skourogiannis could be seen as an anthropological and cultural reflection, as an attempt to assemble different versions of a single, synthetic image of confrontation and reconciliation with the multiple idea of death. Skοurogiannis constructs symbolic forms through a fiction of materiality that is deployed in three dimensions. Disparate materials are arranged together weaving simultaneously the common, ontological thread that runs through his practice.”
