The exhibition
Ekfrasi – yianna grammatopoulou, presents the solo exhibition of Panos Mattheou entitled CONTROL – COMMAND.
Panos Mattheou presents his new body of work, featuring terracotta sculptures combined with prints made using lithographic ink, metal, wood, and synthetic leather. The stylized hollow figures—an explicit reference to T. S. Eliot’s seminal 1929 poem The Hollow Men—dominate the space with their presence, each body captured in a different pose. Together with the surrounding compositions, they form a unified visual installation, a conceptual proposition that focuses on the contemporary sociopolitical condition: a world of surveillance and control, of commands and imposition, where humanity is stripped of its constants and values—exposed, vulnerable, and suspended in a terrifying desolation.
At the core of the works lies the concept of homogenization, the ever-growing drive toward uniformity, the uncritical reproduction and perpetuation of models and stereotypes, the commodification of pain and suffering, the fragmentation and confinement of the self, and the truths we refuse to see—truths that, fittingly, are inscribed in Braille. An accompanying slow-motion video of a sunset unexpectedly takes on a new dimension, inviting viewers into the twilight of existence, into the realm of shadows, where the hollow men reside.
