Ekfrasi – yianna grammatopoulou presents the solo exhibition of Aris Katsilakis entitled A Brave New Animal World.
“Aris Katsilakis’ recent compositions are distinguished by their flawless technique, visual and expressive values, the clarity of volumes and details, their complex structure, as well as their symbolic dimension, claiming their place in the original, revealing, and ambiguous universe of the creator, once inhabited by paradoxical still lifes,” emphasizes Art Historian Yannis Bolis
These works clearly exhibit surrealistic elements, where animal-shaped clay sculptures are combined with old wood, remnants of furniture, military trumpets, and fire extinguishers. Additionally, the artist incorporates gold leaf – a new material in his work – drawing attention to the texture of the white, transparent or opaque glazes and the rough wooden surfaces.
Katsilakis creates with his works a world where animals take center stage, rebelling and demanding their freedom and self-determination. He invites the viewers to reflect and question the anthropocentric world in which we live, a world where the idea of human superiority and dominance prevails at the expense of all other living beings. It is a universe where “fragility coexists with harshness and sensitivity with savagery.”
