The exhibition
Ekfrasi – yianna grammatopoulou presents the solo exhibition of Babis Papagiannis entitled ils s’enfoncent dans le ciel et l’amour.
In the present solo exhibition, the artist presents the traces of his visual research on the poetry of Nikos Karouzos. The works – mixed media on unprimed, raw canvas, along with collages on paper and fabric – emerge as fragments of an experimental trajectory.
The visual language is deeply experiential, engaging in dialogue with an interwar aesthetic and approaching a rough, “dirty” abstraction, where form arises as a trace of experience. Bold brushstrokes, dense textures, a deliberately restless color palette, and drawings in pencil and charcoal come together to form a language that preserves the gesture as vivid and immediate, allowing the material to retain its primal character.
Inspiration is drawn from the materials themselves – linen, cotton, powders, oil – insisting on their physicality, so that the work occurs and pulsates rather than merely represents. His painting moves between the spiritual and the deeply personal, reflecting on memory, emotion, the poetics of vision, and human experience.
The exhibition itself unfolds between the spiritual and the deeply personal, reflecting on memory, emotion, the poetics of vision, and human experience. Ultimately, it proposes not only a way of seeing but a form of engagement: an invitation for the viewer to approach the work through the body and instinct, touching upon the visceral and emotional dimensions of existence.
