The exhibition
Ekfrasi – yianna grammatopoulou, presents the solo exhibition of Miltos entitled Landscape, a closer and a larger view.
In this new body of work, the artist captures nature with striking photographic precision — from snow-covered landscapes and lush green plains to both stormy and tranquil seas, and wheat fields bending in the summer wind. Each large-scale color composition is paired with a smaller black-and-white piece, forming visual diptychs that invite deeper contemplation.
The monochromatic works depict elements such as barbed wire, salt-corroded ropes, abandoned boots, and plastic debris — fragments that speak to the material remnants of human absence. These black-and-white details not only complement the main images but challenge and reinterpret them, adding conceptual depth.
As Skouras himself explains, “In the small black-and-white pieces, through monochrome, the notions of proximity, isolation, oblivion, decay, corrosion, and the trace of human presence shift the work from painting to conceptual reflection, transforming the viewer’s initial perception of the color images and reframing the narrative as a whole.”
Art historian Yannis Bolis notes, “Themes of life, violence and death, decay, time and place, ecology, and the fraught relationship between humans and nature lie at the heart of this series. These works offer original narratives open to multiple readings, while also showcasing the artist’s strong artistic foundation, the consistency of his formal pursuits, and the evolution of his critical concerns.”
Maria Tsantsanoglou, curator and director of MOMus–Museum of Modern Art, remarks, “Miltos Skouras turns the viewer into an investigator. He doesn’t offer answers — he offers clues, urging us to look again, because what we see may not be what it seems. As in crime scenes, calmness can be carefully constructed.”
