Marigo Kassi
Armoire au Féminin

The exhibition

Ekfrasi – Yianna Grammatopoulou presents the solo exhibition of Marigo Kassi entitled Armoire au Féminin.

The artist’s new body of work revolves around the notion of the wardrobe, seen as a feminine symbol. A familiar, everyday object — yet also a vessel of memories, emotions, and secrets — the wardrobe assumes multilayered meanings and uses. On a conceptual level, it can be viewed as a maternal, protective figure, a female body, or an extension of oneself.

Through this lens, Kassi uses a vintage three-door wardrobe, which she deconstructs into three main sections. The remaining parts, together with objects once stored inside it, form the surrounding environment of the installation. Around them unfold mixed-media works — handmade waxed papers, watercolors, threads, and prints — sewn and glued onto gauze, hanging freely in space, alongside watercolors in drawers and oil paintings on canvas.

The works are accompanied by sound compositions by Andrea Cohen, who has created two original pieces for the exhibition. The first composition, heard from within the wardrobe, draws its sounds from the material of the object itself — the creaking of wood, the closing of drawers, the rustle of fabrics — textures that reveal the object in its intimacy. The second composition, installed in the basement space, is a collage of women’s voices in Greek and French, confessing thoughts, memories, and impressions, lending the work a sensitive and narrative dimension.

This exhibition explores themes related to female identity the body, motherhood, relationships, pain, and abuse. The wardrobe becomes a place where memory resides — a refuge for all the things we have kept within ourselves.
