Looper
A Bathroom and Other... Unexpected Human Stories

The exhibition

Ekfrasi – yianna grammatopoulou gallery presents the solo exhibition of Looper, titled A Bathroom and Other… Unexpected Human Stories.

At the heart of the exhibition is the original sculptural installation Bathroom, a life-size reconstruction of a domestic bathroom, complete with all its furnishings and objects. Constructed from cardboard and plexiglass, it appears as a room drawn directly from the universe of the Surrealists.

The exhibition also features a series of sculptures and drawings. In the symbolic box-sculptures, the combination of solid materials (aluminum and steel) with transparent ones (plexiglass), together with the immaterial “material” of light (fluorescent lamps), plays a decisive role in the final result. The glow and reflections of light diffused across the surfaces of the colored plexiglass, along with the interplay of shadows, intensify the uncanny and magical atmosphere evoked by these paradoxical stained-glass-like sculptures.

Clarity of line, expressionistic intensity, and the expressive power of black are defining characteristics of the artist’s large-scale ink compositions. Within these works, Looper’s visual references span a broad spectrum, extending from the cultures of pre-Columbian America to religion and mysticism, as well as contemporary social and political realities, pathological conditions, and states of decay. Equally evident are the influences of comic-book aesthetics, graffiti, and the broader culture of street art.

As art historian Yiannis Bolis aptly observes: “Looper’s images reveal, conceal, and subvert, while being distinguished by a disarming and anarchic sense of humor, activating relationships of participation and complicity with the viewer.”
