Michalis Arfaras

Biography

Michalis Arfaras was born in Athens in 1954. He studied at the Braunschweig University of Fine Arts in Lower Saxony, Germany (1975–1980). From 1980 to 1982, he pursued postgraduate studies at the same institution, with a focus on Printmaking and Animation Film.
He served as Professor of Specialized Subjects at the Institute of Fine Arts and Art Science at the University of Hildesheim, Lower Saxony, Germany (1988–2006). From 2006 to 2022, he served as Professor and Head of the Printmaking Department at the Athens School of Fine Arts, and since 2023 he has held the title of Professor Emeritus of the School.
Since 1990, Arfaras has presented his work in solo exhibitions at galleries and museums across Europe and Greece. He has participated in all major international printmaking biennials as well as numerous experimental film festivals. His work in authoring and curating art books is an ongoing area of exploration and experimentation, occupying a significant part of his artistic practice.
